Located across the harbor from Charleston, originally the area of Mount Pleasant was inhabited by the Seewee Native American Tribe. The first English settlers arrived in 1680 and named the area “North Point.” In 1696, 51 new settlers arrived. Each family was allotted several hundred acres in the area that became known as Christ Church. As time went on and progress was made, the prominent families that lived in the area started plantations. The plantation that was located in what is now known as the “Old Village” was Mount Pleasant Planation and in 1803 the plantation subdivided into lots to create a small village.
